DEATH OF STREATOR MERCHANT
Mr. JAMES ARTHUR, the Streator merchant, died on Sunday after a sickness of nearly three years' duration. He was born in Ohio. His parents removed to Peru in the forties, where his father died of cholera in 1849.
Mr. Arthur was a resident of Peru until 1867 or '68, when he went into business at Odell, and removed from that place to Streator in the early seventies and soon became one of its leading merchants.
His brother, John, was associated with him for a number of years, and the firm of Arthur Bros. was one of the best known in LaSalle and Livingston counties.
James Arthur withdrew from the firm several years ago on account of poor health, but subsequently engaged with his eldest son, Frank Arthur, in the carpet and shoe trade, the latter having the active management of the business.
As a business man Mr. Arthur was conservative. He gave close attention to details, and the result was a continuous growth and prosperity. He acquired considerable property and leaves his family in comfortable circumstances. He served the city as alderman for several terms.
His wife, three children and a sister survive him. The funeral take place at 10 A.M. Tuesday.
