ONE OF THE PIONEERS
Death of John Batcheller, of Center Ottawa, This Morning
Died, at his home on Post street, at an early hour Thursday morning, John
Batcheller, aged 83 years and 7 months. Disease, pneumonia.
Mr. Batcheller was a native of New York, his birthplace being at Homer, at which
place his father was pastor of a church for years. Mr. Batcheller resided on a
farm in New York and Michigan until 1837, when he came to La Salle county, where
he first purchased a farm, but in 1844 moved to this city, where for years he
was engaged in manufacturing brick, and later was employed in a machine shop and
at the carpenter's trade. For the last twenty years he had been retired from
active business. He married Miss Sarah Holden in 1840, who died about three
years ago. They had a large family of children, one of whom, Mrs. A. J. Dudley,
of Toledo, Iowa, still survives. The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon
at 2:30 from his late residence, Rev. L. O. Baird officiating.
