A Pioneer of La Salle County Expires at His Home in East Ottawa

August Bettger, a well-known pioneer resident of La Salle County and a citizen of Ottawa for thirteen years died suddenly at his residence, 413 East Main Street at 5:30 o’clock yesterday of heart disease, aged 70 years. He came to this county from Germany forty-five years ago, and settled on a farm west of Ottawa which includes Buffalo Rock. He resided there thirty-three years, then moved to Ottawa.

In 1858 he married Miss Sophie Heinold who with two sisters, Mrs. Knoll, and Mrs. Rindt of Chicago, and one brother, Henry Bettger, of Marseilles, survive him.

He was a man much respected by all who knew him and during his farm life was very prosperous, amassing an estate now valued at $80,000.

The funeral takes place at 2 O’clock Wednesday afternoon from the German Lutheran Church, of which he had been a member for a great many years.
