Final rites for George Davis grocer in this city for many years, who died
of heart complications Monday morning in St. Mary's Hospital, were conducted
in the Wagner Funeral Home yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. E.W.
Smith, pastor of the Park Presbyterian Church had charge of the service
during which two selections were sung by Mrs. Lester Eades and Mrs. Noble
Arnold. They were accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Smith. Internment
followed in Riverview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Thad Woodward, Emerson Gee, James Keating, Ora Simons, Carl
Arenz, and Fred Pflibsen. The many beautiful flowers were in charge of
Mesdames Harry Manypenny, Robert Sanderson, Betty Rohlfing and Martha
McCloskey.

Lifelong Resident Succumbs To Heart Ailment In St. Mary Hospital
Coming as a shock to his many friends as well as members of his family was
the sudden passing of George Davis, 63, well known local grocer, which
occured at St. Mary hospital this morning at 8:20 o'clock. Mr. Davis became
ill with a heart ailment about two weeks ago while at work and had been
confined to bed since. When his condition became serious Saturday, he was
removed to the hospital but failed to respond to treatment.
The son of Reese and Mary (Alexander) Davis, the decedent was born in
Streator April 17, 1877 and had spent his entire life in this city where he
became engaged in the grocery business for 36 years. He and his brother,
Robert, had been operating the Sowerby Grocery at 111 E. Stanton Street,
just one door east of his home.
His chief interest in addition to his family and business, was the Woodman
lodge of which he had been a member for many years.
The marriage of Mr. Davis and the former Gertrude Gehres took place in this
city in November, 1905 and to their union two daughters were born.
They are Mrs. Arthur Fincham of Streator and Mrs. C. H. Rasmussen of Dallas,
Texas. Mr. Davis is also survived by his widow, one brother Robert, of this
city, a grandson, Davis Arthur Fincham, and an uncle, Elias Alexander of
Royal, Nebraska. His mother preceded him in death in December, 1938 and he
was just 15 years old when his father died.
Pending word from the daughter in Texas, funeral arrangements have not been
completed. Rev. Smith, pastor of the Park Presbyterian church, will
officiate at the services, the time of which will be announced in tomorrow's
issue of the Times Press.
