Schuylar Colfax Michaels, aged 93, died at 2:00 o'clock, Friday afternoon, April 3, in Highland Rest Home, Ottawa, Ill. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage the week before and was removed to the Rest Home where his daughter could have assistance in his care.
He was a son of Thomas and Sarah (Swan) Michaels and was born in 1866; having only recently observed his 93rd birthday.
For many years, Mr. Michaels lived in the Wadena and Goodland communities where he operated a barber shop. While living here he became one of the charter members of the Goodland Volunteer Fire Department and remained an honorary member of this organization until death. He was one of the few old time "fiddlers" and his services as such were in demand. Several years ago, because of advanced years, he and his good wife left this community and made their home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr., and Mrs. Ernest Weiss, near Ottawa. Here Mrs. Michaels, the former Alphonsine Gibeault of Momence, Ill., passed away on January 17, 1957. Twelve brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Surviving with the daughter and son-in-law are five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, other relatives, and a host of friends.
The funeral service, held Monday morning at the Gladfelter Funeral Parlors, Ottawa, was conducted by the Very Rev. Msgr. Cleary of St. Columba's Church, Ottawa. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery.
